Calling Yourself an "AIOps Engineer" Because You Wrapped an API is Like Claiming Michelin Status for Microwaving a Hot Pocket.
Recently, I decided to dedicate some serious time to learning the current state of AI. As a DevOps engineer, my daily life is governed by strict logic, deep system automation, and knowing exactly how the plumbing works. But diving into the modern AI hype cycle? It feels less like acquiring a new technical skill and more like staring into a bottomless pit of buzzwords.
If you spend five minutes on tech social media right now, you will inevitably encounter an army of people proudly wearing titles like "AI Automation Engineer" or "AIOps Specialist."
Here is the punchline: actual AIOps—a term coined by Gartner back in 2016—is a rigorous, deeply mathematical discipline. It relies on big data and machine learning to automate complex IT processes like predictive scaling, anomaly detection, and root cause analysis to keep enterprise servers from catching fire.
It is not writing a five-line Python script that pings ChatGPT.
Instead, the title has been hijacked by a new breed of developers I like to call "Wrapper Engineers." They don't care how the sausage is made; they just want to print the receipt.
The Tech Conference Echo Chamber
This reality hit me like a brick during my recent laps around the vendor floors at KubeCon and AWS re:Invent. If you’ve been, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
The panel ends, the Q&A session begins, and someone confidently strides up to the microphone. They then proceed to ask a question so logically self-evident that it borders on philosophical performance art. The answer is obvious. The documentation is pristine. Yet, they ask it anyway, and suddenly half the room is nodding along, stroking their chins as if this person just unlocked the secrets of the cosmos.
It made me realize something painful about our current ecosystem: a massive chunk of the tech industry has completely stopped caring about what happens under the hood.
We are simply hacking our way to a result, stacking abstractions on top of black boxes, and praying the entire house of cards doesn't spontaneously combust on a Friday at 4:59 PM.
Enter "Vibe Coding" (aka Adding Bugs as a Feature)
This culture of abstraction has given birth to the most terrifying trend of all: Vibe Coding.
Coined in early 2025 by former Tesla and OpenAI researcher Andrej Karpathy, vibe coding describes a state of programming where the developer aggressively prompts Large Language Models to write software without ever actually reading, reviewing, or understanding the underlying output. You just fully give in to the "vibes," embrace the exponential output, and assume the AI will eventually fix its own hallucinations.
Personally? I call it "Adding Bugs as a Feature."
Let's be clear: cheating your way through the learning curve is a time-honored tech tradition. We all owe our careers to StackOverflow. But with AI, this shortcut culture has mutated and multiplied a hundredfold. We are actively breeding a generation of developers who can summon a thousand lines of React in ten seconds, but who will absolutely melt down trying to:
- Debug a simple network latency issue.
- Figure out why their memory usage is spiking.
- Explain the actual architecture of the application they just "built."
Performing Digital Archaeology on Your Own Code
I saw the consequences of this play out in real-time at work just last week.
A team proudly announced they had shipped a batch of new features and heavily "optimized" our codebase in record time. They even used AI to generate all the accompanying documentation. It looked fantastic on the sprint review slide. Management was thrilled.
Then, the inevitable happened: a bug ticket rolled in.
Normally, a developer who actually built a feature from scratch could spot the issue and deploy a hotfix in five minutes. But because this code was entirely AI-generated and blindly copy-pasted, the team had absolutely no idea what was written, how it was structured, or even where the underlying logic lived.
Instead of a five-minute fix, it took them over half an hour just to formulate a guess about the potential root cause. They weren't debugging; they were performing digital archaeology on their own pull requests. When you don't write the code, you don't possess the mental map of the application. The AI documented the "what," but completely robbed them of the "why."
The Bottom Line
I am not a luddite, and I am certainly not anti-AI. Automation is literally the core of my profession. But here is the hard financial and practical reality for companies heavily investing in this space: API wrappers will not save you in production.
When your AI-generated microservice crashes at 2:00 AM, the LLM isn't going to hop on the PagerDuty call.
Unless you have engineers who understand what is happening in the background—the network requests, the compute overhead, the fundamental architecture—you aren't really engineering. You're just pulling the lever on a casino slot machine and hoping the screen lights up.
Tools change. Frameworks die. Hype cycles fade.
But knowing how systems actually work? That is the only asset in your tech stack that never depreciates.
