There's a sound that lives rent-free in the heads of anyone who got online before 2005.
You know the one. That screeching, grinding, digitally-handshaking cacophony that meant: you're in. The dial-up modem negotiation sequence — a 20-second symphony of chaos that was actually, technically, two machines agreeing on exactly how to talk to each other at 28.8 or 33.6 or (if you were lucky) 56 kilobits per second.
It sounds like a fax machine having a breakdown. It was actually a work of art.
The Ritual
Getting online in 1997 wasn't an ambient experience. It was a ceremony with prerequisites:
1. Check that no one needs the phone
2. Open Netscape (or IE, if that was your family's flavor)
3. Double-click the AOL icon — or dial your ISP manually if you were fancy
4. Wait for the modem to pick up the line
5. Listen: did it connect? Did it fail? Will you do it again?
6. Finally: the familiar system sound, the tiny flashing taskbar icon
You were in. For maybe 45 minutes — until someone picked up the phone downstairs and killed your connection mid-download.
What That Sound Actually Was
The dial-up handshake isn't random noise. It's two modems negotiating a compressed digital link over an analog telephone line that was never designed for data. What you heard was:
- Dial tone + number dial — obvious
- Carrier detect — your modem announcing itself to the ISP's modem at a known frequency
- Negotiation chirps — progressively trying faster protocols (V.90, V.34, V.32bis) until both sides agree
- Line conditioning — equalizing for the specific noise profile of your local phone line
- Retrain sequences — those grinding sounds when the modems argue about a better encoding scheme
Every connection was slightly different because every phone line was slightly different. Your modem was doing real-time signal processing to squeeze maximum bandwidth out of a 3kHz-wide voice channel.
That's not a fax machine breaking down. That's your hardware working hard.
What We Had
Once you got through the handshake, you entered a world that had edges:
- AOL discs — the original junk mail, except people collected them. 500 free hours! 1000 free hours! The numbers escalated until the concept of "free hours" stopped meaning anything. I had a binder of them. So did everyone.
- AIM away messages — your personal philosophy, served hot. Song lyrics. Inside jokes. Passive-aggressive status updates. We were micro-blogging in 1999 and didn't have a word for it yet.
- GeoCities pages — tiled backgrounds, Comic Sans, animated under-construction GIFs, hit counters that maybe 12 people incremented. Peak web.
