I Helped Turn Confusing API Docs Into a 10-Minute Onboarding Experience

A while ago, I worked with a product that had a solid API.

Well-designed.
Flexible.
Technically sound.

But there was a problem.

Developers weren’t sticking around.

The Situation

On paper, everything looked fine.

The documentation existed.
Endpoints were explained.
Examples were included.

But in reality:

What I Changed

Instead of rewriting everything, I focused on one goal:

• Reordered content around real use cases
• Added a clear “start here” path
• Simplified examples to remove noise
• Explained intent, not just endpoints
• Removed unnecessary technical overload

No new features.

Just better clarity.

The Result

The difference was immediate:

• Faster onboarding
• Fewer repeated questions
• Less reliance on support
• More confident users

Same API.

Completely different experience.

The Real Lesson

Most teams try to fix adoption by adding more features.

But adoption doesn’t come from more capability.

It comes from less confusion.
