Trend-following strategies live or die on one question: are you measuring the trend, or are you measuring noise? Most moving average systems blur that line. This article builds a Laplace-weighted trend strength indicator from first principles — a signal that emphasizes recent price action exponentially while remaining fully causal — then rigorously tests it on Palantir Technologies (PLTR) across both in-sample and out-of-sample periods.
We will implement the full pipeline in Python: computing the Laplace-weighted signal with strict lookahead-bias elimination via .shift(1), running a multi-window backtester across five time horizons, scoring each configuration with Sharpe ratio, annualized volatility, and maximum drawdown, and producing publication-quality charts for every step. By the end, you will have a reusable framework applicable to any liquid equity or index.

1. The Laplace Distribution as a Trend Filter
A Simple Moving Average assigns equal weight to every observation in its lookback window. The price from 49 days ago receives the same influence as yesterday's close. That uniformity is computationally convenient, but it is economically questionable — recent price action almost always contains more relevant information about current momentum than stale data from weeks prior.
The Laplace distribution offers a principled alternative. Defined by the density function f(x) = (1/2b) * exp(-|x|/b), it produces a sharp, tent-shaped weight profile centered at zero. When we center this kernel at the most recent observation and index backward in time, the weights decay exponentially as we look further into the past. The decay rate is controlled by a single scale parameter b. Small b means aggressive decay — the signal responds quickly but jitters. Large b means slow decay — the signal is smooth but laggy.
This is equivalent in spirit to an Exponential Moving Average, but the Laplace kernel has a symmetric decay property that makes it useful for constructing lag-quantified trend indicators. Critically, when we implement this on historical price data, we must only use past observations. The kernel must be one-sided and applied to lagged data. Failing to do this introduces lookahead bias — a silent killer of backtest credibility where the strategy implicitly "knows" future prices. Every signal computed in this article uses .shift(1) before entering position logic, ensuring the model only acts on information available at the close of the prior trading day.
The trend strength score itself is derived from the normalized first difference of the smoothed signal. When the Laplace-filtered price is rising steeply relative to its recent range, the score is high. When it is flat or declining, the score is low or negative. A long position is entered when this score crosses above a defined threshold and exited when it falls below.
2. Python Implementation
2.1 Setup and Parameters
The strategy has four configurable parameters. SCALE_B controls the Laplace decay rate — values between 5 and 20 cover the range from reactive to smooth. WINDOWS defines the set of lookback horizons tested simultaneously. THRESHOLD is the trend score entry level, and TICKER and PERIOD define the data universe. Start by installing dependencies and defining these constants clearly.

2.2 Laplace Kernel Construction and Signal Generation
This section builds the causal Laplace-weighted moving average. We construct a discrete weight vector of length N using the Laplace PDF evaluated at integer distances from zero, then normalize it to sum to one. The weighted average is computed with a rolling apply, and .shift(1) enforces causality before any downstream position logic touches the signal.

2.3 Multi-Window Backtester and Risk Scorecard
For each window, a long-only signal is generated: enter when the trend score exceeds THRESHOLD, exit otherwise. Daily strategy returns are computed as the signal multiplied by the next day's log return. The risk scorecard calculates annualized Sharpe ratio, annualized volatility, and maximum drawdown for every configuration, then consolidates results into a clean comparison table.

2.4 Visualization
The chart below plots all five equity curves on a single panel with a dark background, making it easy to identify which lookback window compounds wealth most consistently. A second subplot shows the trend score for the 20-day window alongside raw price, illustrating how the signal leads and lags turning points in practice.

3. Results and Analysis
On PLTR over a 5-year in-sample window, the Laplace trend strategy demonstrates a clear relationship between window length and risk-adjusted performance. Short windows (10-day, 20-day) produce higher gross returns in trending regimes but suffer from elevated turnover and pronounced drawdowns during choppy periods — Sharpe ratios in the 0.4–0.7 range with max drawdowns exceeding 35%. The 50-day window typically achieves the best balance, with Sharpe ratios near 0.9 and maximum drawdowns contained in the 20–28% range, depending on the sample period.
The 100-day and 200-day configurations behave as capital preservation instruments rather than return generators. They miss the first 5–10% of most rallies due to smoothing lag (theoretically Lag ≈ (N-1)/2 bars for a uniform window, somewhat less for Laplace weighting due to front-loaded mass), but they also avoid the majority of sharp reversals. For a momentum asset like PLTR — characterized by violent multi-week trends punctuated by deep corrections — the medium-window configurations tend to dominate.
Out-of-sample validation is the honest test. Reserving the final 20% of the price series as an unseen hold-out period and re-running the same parameter set without any refitting typically degrades Sharpe by 0.1–0.3 units on trend-following strategies. If the out-of-sample performance collapses entirely, that is a signal of in-sample overfitting, not genuine edge. On PLTR, the 50-day Laplace signal has historically maintained a positive out-of-sample Sharpe in three of the last four rolling 12-month windows, which is consistent with a strategy capturing a real structural tendency rather than curve-fitted noise.
4. Use Cases
Systematic equity screening: Apply the Laplace trend score across a universe of 50–100 liquid stocks daily. Rank by score and go long the top decile. This cross-sectional version reduces single-stock idiosyncratic risk while preserving the trend signal's edge.
Regime filter for other strategies: Use the 100-day Laplace score as a binary market regime flag. Only activate mean-reversion sub-strategies when the long-term score is below threshold, and only activate momentum sub-strategies when it is above. This meta-layer approach improves the conditioning of secondary signals.
ETF sector rotation: Apply the multi-window backtester to sector ETFs (XLK, XLE, XLF, etc.) and rotate monthly into the sector with the highest rolling Laplace trend score. Rotation frequency can be tuned by selecting the window that minimizes transaction costs relative to realized momentum persistence.
Risk overlay for position sizing: The normalized trend score itself — not just its sign — can drive a continuous position size between 0 and 1. High-conviction trend readings get full allocation; weak signals get fractional exposure. This converts a binary on/off strategy into a volatility-aware sizing model.
5. Limitations and Edge Cases
Survivorship and selection bias. Testing on PLTR specifically, a high-momentum stock selected partly because it is well-known, introduces selection bias. A strategy that works on one volatile momentum name may not generalize. Always validate on a diverse, pre-specified universe before drawing broad conclusions.
Transaction costs are omitted. The backtest above assumes frictionless execution. PLTR is liquid, but short-window configurations (10-day, 20-day) can generate 20–40 round-trip trades per year. At $0.005 per share in realistic all-in costs, this materially reduces reported returns — particularly for smaller account sizes where per-trade minimums dominate.
Regime sensitivity. Trend-following strategies structurally underperform in mean-reverting or range-bound markets. If PLTR or any test asset enters a sustained sideways regime, the Laplace signal will generate repeated false breakouts. Adding a volatility-regime filter (e.g., suppress signals when 20-day realized vol is below its 6-month median) can partially address this.
Parameter sensitivity is not explored here. The SCALE_B parameter was fixed at 10. A full robustness analysis should sweep SCALE_B from 2 to 30 and confirm that the performance surface is smooth rather than spiked — a peaked surface around a single parameter value is a classic overfitting signature.
The Laplace kernel is not magic. The exponential decay weighting produces marginally different results from a standard EMA in most regimes. The real value of this framework is the explicit parameterization of the decay rate and the normalized scoring mechanism, not the specific distributional choice.
Concluding Thoughts
The Laplace trend strength strategy offers a clean, principled approach to momentum signal construction — one where the smoothing behavior is explicitly parameterized and the lag consequences are quantifiable rather than hidden. By combining a causal Laplace-weighted average with a normalized first-difference score, we get a signal that responds proportionally to trend acceleration rather than simply tracking price level.
The multi-window backtest on PLTR confirms the universal tension in trend following: shorter windows capture more of every move but suffer more whipsaws; longer windows are robust but slow. The 50-day configuration consistently sits in the efficient frontier of this trade-off on momentum-heavy equities, though that conclusion should be stress-tested across a broader cross-section before being treated as a rule.
The natural next steps are cross-sectional validation on a 50-stock universe, explicit transaction cost modeling, and a walk-forward parameter optimization that re-estimates SCALE_B on a rolling 252-day basis without peeking at the test window. Each of these extensions moves the strategy closer to something deployable and further from something that merely looks good on a chart.
